TUE
Therapeutic Use Exemption
If you need to use a medication on the prohibited list for legitimate medical reasons, you can apply for a TUE.
What is TUE?
Therapeutic Use Exemption (TUE) allows athletes to use normally prohibited substances if they have legitimate medical need and obtain prior approval.
When you may need a TUE
Asthma and inhalers
Some inhalers contain beta-2 agonists that appear on the prohibited list. A TUE may be required even for long-term asthma treatment.
Hormone therapy
Certain hormone treatments can affect testosterone levels or other markers and require advance approval to remain eligible for competition.
Neurological or attention disorders
Medications prescribed for ADHD or similar conditions may contain stimulants that are prohibited without a valid TUE.
Eligibility
- Valid medical diagnosis from a physician
- Medication is necessary for treatment with no reasonable permitted alternative
- Use does not create unfair competitive advantage beyond returning the athlete to normal health
- Application submitted before deadline except in genuine emergency cases
Application Process
Gather Medical Records
Obtain diagnosis confirmation, treatment history and prescription from your doctor.
Complete TUE Form
Fill out the TUE application using USADA/WADA format with your physician’s input.
Submit Application
Send the complete application to VNPL or the relevant federation at least 30 days before competition where possible.
Await Approval
The medical committee reviews your case and responds with approval, denial or a request for more information.
Important Notes
- TUE must usually be approved BEFORE using medication in competition settings.
- Every TUE has an expiry date and may require renewal if treatment continues.
- Emergency situations are handled on a case-by-case basis and may still require documentation.
- Not all TUE applications are approved — incomplete or unjustified requests may be rejected.
Common questions
What if I submit a TUE late?
Late TUEs may still be considered in genuine emergency or unforeseen situations, but approval is not guaranteed. You should contact the federation as soon as possible.
Does a TUE last forever?
No. TUEs are granted for a specific period and medical condition. You may need to renew your TUE if your treatment continues beyond the approved timeframe.
Who reviews my TUE?
TUE applications are reviewed by an independent medical committee operating under anti-doping rules, not by VNPL competition staff.
